Masconomet Winter Sports Capsules 2012-13

BOYS HOCKEY

Last season: 8-11-1 (did not qualify for playoffs)

Head coach: Andrew Jackson (1st year)

Team captains: Alec DiGiorgio, Sr. F; Matt Cardillo, Sr. G.

Other key returnees: Ty Costello, Jr. D; Joe Griffin, Soph. D; Nick Aleckna, Jr. F; Anthony Anzalone, Sr. F.

Interesting newcomers: Vitaly Knowles, Soph. F; Mike Castro, Soph. F.

It’ll be a great season if: Team defense rises to the challenge each and every game for the Chieftains. Cardillo (7 wins, 3.12 GAA as a junior) is back for his second season as the team’s starter and has a talented, mobile group of defensemen in front of him. If Masconomet can find a way to score some goals, a return to the postseason could be on the horizon.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Last season: 9-8-4 (Fell in Division 1 preliminary round)

Head coach: Nicole Twomey (1st year)

Team captains: Alex Jones, Sr., G; Kendra Dow, Sr., F

Other key returnees: Nancy Palermo, Sr., D; Jensena Moner, So., F; Amanda Coppa, So., F; Dana Valletti, So., F.

It’ll be a great season if: They blend. The Chieftains have added Triton to a co-op mix that already includes Hamilton-Wenham, Georgetown, North Andover and Newburyport. They have one of the best goalies around in Alex Jones, so if they find a way to score, they’ll be in every game.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Last season: 14-7 (Lost to Lynn Classical, 49-46, in the Div. 2 North first round)

Head coach: Frank Shea (5th year)

Team captains: Chris Schleer, Sr. G; Tighe VanLenten, Sr. G

Other key returnees: Sean Antonuccio, Sr. F.

It’ll be a great season if: Schleer, VanLenten and Antonuccio can hold down the fort while the remaining players get experienced. Shea feels that he has some solid senior experience, and while the Chieftains aren’t necessarily young, they don’t have much in-game varsity experience.
