---- — BOYS HOCKEY
Last season: 14-6-1 (Lost to Saugus in Division 2 North first round)
Head coach: Bobby Gilligan (10th year, 92-72-14)
Team captains: Andrew Irving, Sr. LW; Connor Irving, Jr. C; Matt Hamor, Jr. D; Tom Lingren, Sr. F (asst.)
Other key returnees: Tim Biarelli, Soph. G; Ryan Santo, Jr. F; Jake Straw, Jr. RW; Nick Albano, Soph. D; Sean Munzing, Jr. D; Jack Morency, Jr. D; Kevin Lally, Jr. F; Ted Leathersich, Soph. F; Bryce Mitchell, Jr. G.
Interesting newcomers: Nate McLaughlin, Sr. F; Jesse McLaughlin, Soph. D; Sean Hanlon, Fr. D.
It’ll be a great season if: The hunger continues. Beverly felt there was quite a bit of unfinished business last season after an early round playoff loss, and virtually every player from that squad is back and hoping to make amends. Experience and depth are two huge pluses for the Panthers, who return 59 goals.
Last season: 10-9-2 (Fell in Division 1 preliminary round)
Head coach: Brian Seabury (1st year)
Team captains: Livvy Konaxis, Sr., F; Katie Szela, Sr., D
Key returnees: Nicole Woods, Jr., F; Caitlin McBride, Jr., D; Ami Thompson, Jr., G; Nicole Kamens, Jr., F; Anna O’Neill, Fr., F; Kristen McCarthy, Fr., F; Anna Hayden, Fr., F
It’ll be a great season if: The goaltending comes together. The Panthers have really only had two goalies (Brianna Jackson and Jenna LoVasco) in all their years as a varsity program, so it’ll be strange seeing another name on the scoresheet. Ami Thompson looked ready for the role in limited time last season, so expect Beverly to be among the area’s better girls teams.
Last season: 14-8 (Lost to North Andover, 59-47, in Div. 2 North quarterfinals)
Head coach: Scott Lewis (9th year)
Team captains: Cam Rogers, Sr. F/G; Dom Abate, Sr. G.
Other key returnees: John Berchoff, Jr. F; Jonangel Franco, Jr. G; Mike Dooling, Sr. F; Josh Cairns, Jr. G.
It’ll be a great season if: Beverly can quickly develop some team chemistry and find a way to rebound with a small lineup. A big key to the early portion of the Panthers’ schedule will be how quickly they come together. Beverly got a late start because of all the football players who missed the first week of practice. The Panthers also have to overcome the loss of the size they had in the frontcourt last winter.
Last season: 3-17
Head coach: Matt Smith (13th year)
Team captains: Andrea Zelano, Sr. F; Jill Stirrat, Sr. G; Abby Carnevale, Jr. F.
Other key returnees: Christina Hart, Sr. F; Tatyana Murad, Sr. G; MaryCate Flaherty, Jr. G.
It’ll be a great season if: “If we improve every practice and every game,” Smith said. “We had a very good week of tryouts; the girls worked really hard and appear to be buying in to our new style of play.”
Last season: 6-1
Head coach: Dave Swensen (1st year)
Team captains: Karl Brandt, Sr., sprints, freestyle; Becca Kemmer, Sr., all-around; Emily Walsh, Jr., distance freestyle; Jackie Cohen, Jr.
Other key returnees: Maddie Thomas, Soph., freestyle; Mackenna Ward, Jr., all-around; Caroline Decker, Soph., all-around; Maddie Curran, Soph., backstroke, freestyle; Patrick Donoghue, Sr., all-around; Rachel Grant, Soph., butterfly; Mackenzie Swensen, Sr., diving; Sarah Welch, Fr., all-around; Astrid Swensen, Soph., butterfly, IM.
It’ll be a great season if: The Panthers have a strong freshman class to add to a solid the nucleus; they need to tap into its depth to have another great year.
Last season: 9-0 (NEC/CAL Champions, 2nd at States)
Head coach: Lauryn Ginsburg (4th year)
Team captains: Loralee Smith, Sr.; Adrianna Beatrice, Sr.
Other key returnees: Heather Gomes, Soph.; Hannah Rennie, Soph.; Kate Jackimowicz, Soph.
It’ll be a great season if: “It’ll be a great season if we work hard, stay healthy, and be consistent. We have six new freshmen so even after losing six seniors we still have 16 strong gymnasts on our team this year.”
Last season: 4-3
Head coach: Nelson DeSilvestre (18th year)
Team captains: Andrew Poveromo, Sr., High Jump/Hurdles; Michael Black, Sr., Middle Distance; Aren Seremla, Sr., Shot Put; Kenny Pierce, Sr., Sprints.
Other key returnees: Brendan Flaherty, Sr., Sprints; Alex Greco, Soph., Distance; Jay Richardson, Sr., High Jump/Hurdles; Dylan Perry, Sr., Middle Distance; Campbell Wood, Soph., Distance.
It’ll be a great season if: “We stay healthy,” said DeSilvestre. “High hurdles is an area of concern; otherwise we’ll be pretty solid. We have several football players, who will get a late start, and we have a big meet with Peabody early.”
Last season: 6-1
Head coach: Dave Jellerson (22nd year)
Team captains: Teresa Orr, Sr., Sprints; Nicole Kirsch, Sr., Shot Put; Madison Shropshire, Sr., Distance; Allison Collins, Sr., Distance.
Other key returnees: Nicole Demars, Jr., Distance; Kristen O’Connor, Jr., Sprints; Caitlin Harty, Jr., Sprints; Jessica Goodall, Jr., Distance; Kyra Richardson, Sr., Jumps; Katie Pietrini, Sr., Sprints.
It’ll be a great season if: “We can strengthen our middle distance. We’re solid in distance events, and sprinting and hurdles look very good. We need to reinforce the high jump and middle distance,” said Jellerson.
Last season: 14-6
Head coach: Mark Thomas (7th year)
Team captains: Brian Perry, Sr., 220 lbs.
Other key returnees: Jonah Feingold, Jr., 120 lbs.; Nick Parianos, Sr., 132; Joe Kozlowski, Jr., 132; T.J. McGovern, Jr., 145; Tom Wilbur, Jr., 170; Sean Winston, Jr., 182/195; Brian Tripoli, Sr., 195; Pat Queiroz, Sr., 195/220.
It’ll be a great season if: “We can line up our weights so we’re spread out,” said Thomas, “because we have plenty of returnees.”
