Ipswich High Winter Sports Capsules 2012-13

Last season: 6-14 (Did not qualify for the postseason)

Head coach: Alan Laroche (5th year)

Team captains: Matt Jaeger, Jr. G; Kyle Blomster, Jr. G; Nate Glaster, Jr. G; Erik Fyrer, Jr. F.

Other key returnees: None.

It’ll be a great season if: Ipswich can make it difficult for its opponents to score. The Tigers’ focus will be on defense this winter with a group of long, athletic guards. Ipswich’s Zack Angel, a guard, is the team’s only senior.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Last season: 18-5 (Lost to Pentucket in Division 3 North final)

Head coach: Mandy Zegarowski (10th year)

Team captains: Julia Davis, Sr. G; Brigid O’Flynn, Sr. F; Natalie Soliozy, Sr. G.

Other key returnees: Bridget Curran, Jr. F; Masey Zegarowski, So. G; Caroline Soucy, So. G.

It’ll be a great season if: “We can keep progressing and improving as the season goes on,” Zegarowski said.

SWIMMING

Last season: 0-9

Head coach: Nancy Lindquist (third year)

Team captains: Sarah Nelson, Sr., IM; Jessica Putnam, Sr., IM and breaststroke; Jessica Spencer, Sr., freestyle

Other key returnees: Joey Spinale, Jr, backstroke; Austin Rubino, Jr., breaststroke; Josh Bergner, Soph., freestyle; Josh Colameta, Soph, freestyle; Tessa Amoroso, Soph., diver; Jacquelyn Bouvier, Fr., distance, backstroke; Shane Neilson, Jr., butterfly; Amelia Young, Fr., diver; Claire Frey, Soph., breaststroke.

It’ll be a great season if: The Tigers, who were lacking in butterfly and distance last season, can fill those gaps this winter. Lindquist said her team can’t wait to get the season started.

WRESTLING

(Co-op team with Georgetown)

Last season: 3-17-2

Head coach: Mike Curley (5th year)

Team captains: Chris Paquette, Sr., 145 lbs.; David Ingraham, Sr., 132.

Other key returnees: Charlie Galanis, Soph., 113 lbs.; Mike Galanar, Jr., 126; Matt Carey, Soph., 182

It’ll be a great season if: “We hold each other accountable and push each other in practice every day,” said Curley. “Iron sharpens Iron.“

BOYS TRACK

Last season: 5-4

Head coach: Marty Binette (1st year)

Key returnees: J.T. Romano, Sr., 600/4x4 Relay; Robby Fay, Sr., High Jump/300/4x4 Relay; Nick Mamolette, Sr., 600/1000; Brendan Sweeney, Sr., Shot Put; Alex Jean-Charles, Jr., Sprints/High Jump; Ryan Bahar, Jr., Hurdles; Michael Riddle, Jr., Distance

It’ll be a great season if: “Our top athletes perform as they have in the past, and a couple of other contributors emerge from our depth,” Binette remarked. “We have over 50 athletes out for the team, so a key will be finding a diamond in the rough who can score.”

GIRLS TRACK

Last season: 9-1

Head coach: Gardy O’Flynn (5th year)

Team captains: Hannah Steele, Sr., High Jump/Sprints; Sarah Keiran, Sr., 1,000/Mile/Two Mile; Tina Keiran, Sr., 1,000/Mile/Two-Mile

Other key returnees: Becca Goulet-Martel, Sr., Hurdles/ Courtney Long, Sr., Shot Put; Celia Zampitella, Sr., Shot Put; Jill Calvani, Jr., 300; Devin Smith, Jr., 300

It’ll be a great season if: “We find some diamonds in the rough early this season,” O’Flynn said. “We have a very good group of seniors who are committed to indoor track and are talented, but our top 300-400 runner, (junior) Hannah Wallis, tore her ACL in soccer and is out for the year.”
