Swampscott High Winter Sports Capsules 2012-13

BOYS HOCKEY

Last season: 8-9-4 (Lost to Wayland in Division 3 North first round)

Head coach: Gino Faia (13th year, 88-129-25)

Key returnees: Trevor Massey, Sr. D; Chris Carman, Sr. D; Chris Dandreo, Sr. D; Robert Serino, Sr. F; Corey Carmody, Sr. F; Griffin Hunt, Jr. F; Nunzio Morretti, Jr. F; Joey Silva, Jr. F; Ryan Cresta, Soph. F.

Interesting newcomers: Tristan Bradley, Fr. G; Patrick Burkett, Sr. D.

It’ll be a great season if: Goaltending comes through and new scoring sources are found. Bradley will battle sophomore Trent Gallagher for the starter’s job between the pipes while the Big Blue need to find a way to replace 35 goals they lost to graduation from last season. Morretti, Carmody, Serino, Massey et. al. will be asked to step it up offensively.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Last season: 8-12

Head coach: Justine Fucile (4th year)

Team captains: Steven Bowers, Sr. F; Dan Trentsch, Sr. G.

Other key returnees: Val Temin, Sr. G; John King, Jr. G; Chad Nelson, Jr. F/C; Sam Walker, Jr. F/C.

It’ll be a great season if: Swampscott commits to defense and rebounding. The Big Blue have some talented returning players, but they are undersized. “We have to defend, rebound and get on the break,” Fucile said.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Last season: 18-4 (Lost in Division 3 semifinals to Pentucket)

Head coach: Abrom Roberts (1st year)

Team captains: Ara Talkov, Sr. F; Alexa Goldman, Sr. G.

Other key returnees: Anna Greene, Sr. F.

It’ll be a great season if: “If we play defense and play together,” said Roberts.

SWIMMING

Last season: 4-4-1

Head coach: Meaghan Simpson (5th year)

Team captains: Cymantha Rogers, Sr. all-around; Erin Cassidy, Sr. freestyle, breaststroke.

Other key returnees: Danielle Mayblyum, Jr. diving; Emma Hunt, Jr. backstroke; Meg Wayne, Sr. distance.

It’ll be a great season if: The first-time varsity members and returnees can help make up for the loss of 11 graduated swimmers. How much they’re willing to take on will be key.

BOYS TRACK

Last season: 5-2

Head coach: Joe Tenney (12th year)

Team captains: Peter Hale, Sr., Distance; Sam Crimmins, Sr., Distance; Declan McClung, Sr., Middle Distance; Zach Blonder, Sr., Sprints; Robert Seymour, Sr., Shot Put.

Other key returnees: Andy Covino, Sr., Middle Distance; Danny Duff, Sr., Shot Put; Aidan Brawley, Jr., Middle Distance/Hurdles; Erick Verdu, Sr., Middle Distance; Matt Mahoney, Jr., Distance.

It’ll be a great season if: “The great attitude they all have continues,” said Tenney. “They work well with each other and are a very solid team all around.”
