Bishop Fenwick Winter Sports Capsules 2012-13

The Salem News

Last season: 2-16-2 (did not qualify for playoffs)

Head coach: Dan Lynch (3rd year, 17-21-4)

Key returnees: Mike Napolitano, Sr. RW; Drew Thibodeau, Sr. RW; Jake Brennan, Sr. D; Mark Todisco, Sr. D; P.J. Usalis, Sr. D; Brian Bassett, Jr. F; Brian Corcoran, Jr. F; Pat O’Leary, Jr. G.

It’ll be a great season if: Fenwick can take the hard lessons it learned last winter during its first season as a Division 1 club and put them to good use in 2012-13. The Crusaders, while young, do have terrific speed and a solid netminder in O’Leary.

Last season: 0-16

Head coach: Doug Anderson (1st year)

Team captains: Demi Velonis, Sr., D; Alexandra Pagano, Sr., F; Madison Hunt., Sr., F; Emily Galligan, So., D

Other key returnees: Megan McGonagle, So., D; Justine Armand, So., D; Meghan Woodworth, Fr., G; Gabby Dotolo, Fr., F; Maggie Clark, So., F

It’ll be a great season if: They can build on the leadership from six seniors. The Crusaders have 19 kids, including two freshmen and 10 sophomores. It’s a group with some on-ice experience, but they’ll need to adjust to the high school game in a hurry since Fenwick has a pair of games before this section goes to print.

Last season: 7-13 (Did not qualify for the postseason)

Head coach: Mike Kane (5th year)

Team captains: None named yet.

Other key returnees: Dom Luoni, Jr. G; Matt Costello, Jr. F; Ben Maxner, Sr. C; Rashad DeSilva, Jr, G; Fran Hannon, Sr. F; Joe Bucchieri, Sr. G.

It’ll be a great season if: The Crusaders can build off their late-season success from a year ago. Fenwick returns six experienced players from a team that won four of its last five games a year ago. Juniors Travis Maxner and Eric Razney have also played well in the preseason, which should give this team some added depth.

Last season: 9-13

Head coach: Adam DeBaggis (2nd year)

Team captains: Rose Fantozzi, Sr. F; Kelsey Wilkinson, Sr. F; Sam Borelli, Sr. F; Kate Lipka, Jr. G.

Other key returnees: Gianna Pizzano, Jr. G.

It’ll be a great season if: The Crusaders can limit turnovers and consistently score points. DeBaggis expects sophomore guards Lexie Rose and Jenny Nasser, plus junior guard Chandler Wilder to bring more options to the Fenwick lineup. He believes, as a team, Fenwick will be a strong defensive club.

Last season: 4-2

Head coach: Cara Buckwell (7th year)

Team captain: Marlena DiNattia, Sr. breaststroke, IM.

Other key returnees: Carson Christuk, Soph., all-around; Jimmy Gauthier, Jr., sprint, freestyle, breaststroke; Bridgette Townsend, Jr., backstroke, IM; Linsey Andrews, Jr., backstroke, freestyle.

It’ll be a great season if: The Crusaders return four conference all-stars and will consider it a successful season if they can beat friendly rival Cardinal Spellman, which has always been a close meet.

Last season: 5-2

Head coach: Jay Smith (9th year)

Team captains: Dan Deschenes, Sr., Long Sprints/Middle Distance; Bryan Mendes, Sr., Middle/Long Distance; Patrick Corcoran, Sr., Shot Put/Weight Throw.

Other key returnees: Charlie Maistrellis, Jr., Sprints/Jumps; Nick Tambini, Jr., Middle/Long Distance; Frank Tambini, Sr., Middle/Long Distance; Brendan McCarthy, Jr., Middle/Long Distance; Jim DiGiulio, So., Middle/Long Distance; Andrew Carlin, Sr., Throws/Jumps.

It’ll be a great season if: “There is talent and potential, which we’ll need to fill in for the skill and speed events,” Smith said. “If they come together we’ll have a solid season. Although some of the boys are tested and have had considerable success, on balance this is a young team. Our middle and distance group is coming off a solid fall campaign, though.”

Last season: 6-0-1 (league co-champions)

Head coach: Jay Smith (9th year)

Team captains: Maggie Lepley, Sr., Shot Put/Weight throw; Becky Mercurio, Sr., Sprints/Jumps; Julia Pierce, Sr., Long Sprints/Jumps

Other key returnees: Arianna Maida, Jr., Middle/ Long Distance; Abigail Smith, Sr.; Middle/ LongDistance; Hannah Smith, Sr., Middle/Long Distance; Natalie Emerson, Jr., Sprints/Jumps/Hurdles; Nicole Lizotte, Sr., Sprints/Jumps/Hurdles; Jess Ywuc, Sr., Sprints/Jumps/Hurdles; Carolyn Claveau, Sr., Throws

It’ll be a great season if: “If they establish themselves early, the team will be poised for success. We’ll be challenged in the early dual meets, which should prepare us for the big meets in January. We have a lot of senior leadership in all disciplines. The middle/distance group is coming off a very successful fall, and some of the throwers have been training all fall. There is a lot of talent in the hurdles, jumps and sprint group.”
