St. John's Prep 2013 Spring Sports Previews

The Salem News

---- — BASEBALL

Last year’s record: 16-6 (Lost in Division 1 North second round)

Head coach: Pat Yanchus (33rd season, 460-245)

Captains: Brandon Bingel, Sr., SS/P; Tommy Bounopane, Sr., SS/2B; Tyler Noe, Sr., 3B.

Key Returnees: Nick Bragole, Sr., 1B; Keith Leavitt, So., OF; Alex Moore, Sr., OF; Dave Bornstein, Sr., DH/1B; Paul Crehan, Sr., C; Dustin Hunt, Sr., P; Mike Driscoll, Sr., OP; Jack Krasovec, Sr., P; Jack Burke, Sr., P; Matt Cabral, Sr., OF; Zack Rice, Sr., OF; Nick Latham, So., OF.

Strengths: Starting pitching. The Eagles have three Division 1 arms on the staff in Bingel (Bryant) and Northeastern commits Hunt and Driscoll. That rotation, and a Division 1 recruit in the infield in Buonopane (URI), will help them navigate one of the toughest schedules in the state.

Concerns: Run production. The Eagles were held to three runs or fewer in five of their six losses last season; stronger at-bats with men in scoring position could put a team looking for its first state title in 13 years over the top.

Coach’s Outlook: “The players have come back in good shape, they worked hard in the winter and they’ve been enthusiastic. Last year we pitched well and played good defense but didn’t score a lot of runs. We’re hoping if everybody that’s back does a little bit better, then we’ll do better.”

LACROSSE

Last year’s record: 10-10 (lost to Lincoln-Sudbury, 12-6, in the East Div. 1 first round)

Head coach: John Roy (19th season)

Captains: Tucker Mathers, Sr. D; Jack Sharrio, Sr. A; Derek Osbahr, Sr. M.

Key Returnees: Drew O’Connell, Jr. M; Ben Anthony, Jr. M; Sam Frick, Jr. M; Andrew Gallahue, Jr. A; Joey Cavallaro, Jr. A; Lucas Bavaro, Sr. LSM; Brian Uva, Sr. LSM; Eamon O’Leary, Jr. LSM; Chris Casey, Jr. LSM; Tom Casale, Sr. G.

Strengths: Long pole depth, defense and faceoff. Led by Mathers, Bavaro and Uva, the Eagles are strong and deep on defense, and short stick defensive middie Will Raven will also contribute to a good defense. Osbahr and Anthony Merullo are very good at the faceoff X.

Concerns: Consistency. Roy has a talented group of players again this spring, but the Eagles play such a difficult schedule both in and outside of the Catholic Conference that any letdowns can translate into losses. Roy feels that 100 percent effort every day needs to be the goal and if the Eagles can do that, the wins will follow.

Coach’s Outlook: “We always look toward the conference championship. It’s not easy, but we’d love it if we can and obviously we would love to make the state tournament. That is the goal we strive for. People tend to have high expectations for us, but our goal is to give 100 percent every day and hopefully things will work out. We can’t look down the road.”

TENNIS

Last year’s record: 16-2

Head coach: Mark Metropolis (24th season)

Captains: Chris Toner, Sr., first singles; Ian Wright, Sr., first doubles/singles; Jonathan Shaffer, Sr., doubles.

Key Returnees: Dan Cunningham, Jr., singles; Nico Limacher, Jr., singles.

This season will be successful if: “We can contend for a title.”

TRACK

Last year’s record: 3-1

Head coach: Ray Carey (36th season)

Team captains: To be named later

Key returnees: David Roy, Sr., Shot Put/Discus; Evan Dombrowski, Jr., Shot Put/Discus; Vinnie LaRovere, Jr., Shot Put/Discus; Dan Sullivan, Sr., Shot Put/Discus; Liam Dow, Jr., Distance; Tom O’Shea, Sr., Distance; Tim Loehner, Jr., Distance; Nick Fecteau, Sr., Distance; Will Stark, Sr., 400/800; Josh Hubbell, Jr., 100/200; Jack Sanford, Sr., 400; Andrew Zucco, Sr., 400; Henry Nicolas, Sr., 100/200

Coach’s outlook: “Our strengths are in the throws and distance events with a solid group of middle distance runners, but we have to fill some holes in the triple jump, high jump and hurdles. We have a big meet with BC High very early. I’m looking to have a strong season in the areas where we have some outstanding athletes.”
