Masconomet 2013 Spring Sports Previews

The Salem News

Last year’s record: 10-11 (Lost in Division 2 North first round)

Head coach: T.J. Baril (First season at Masco, 90-54 at Swampscott)

Captains: Speros Varinos, Sr., SS/P; Tommy Budrewicz, Jr., OF/P; Greg Jain, Sr., P.

Key Returnees: Josh Griffith, Sr., IF; Dylan Amore, Sr., C; Joe Klingensmith, Jr., IF; Mike Manni, So., C; Zach Duval, So., C; Edison Thayer, Sr., 1B/OF.

Strengths: Defense and work ethic. Varinos is excellent at shortstop and the Chieftains have speed in the outfield. They’d also embraced the new coaching staff and have attacking practices with in-game mentality.

Concerns: Experience. Masconomet has five seniors, three of them returning starters, but graduated their 3-4 hitters and their No. 1 starter on the mound.

Coach’s Outlook: “The kids are getting a good understanding of how aggressive we want to be and they’re excited about that. They’ve been really attentive and they’re ready to go. As a staff, we feel fortunate to be here and we want to continue the success Masco has had.”

Last year’s record: 17-4 (lost to Andover in Division 1 first round)

Head coach: Mike Gibeley (2nd season)

Captains: Rachel Shamon, Sr., P; Erin Campbell, Sr., IF; Sammie Martin, Sr., CF.

Key Returnees: Alex Mendelsohn, Jr., OF/C; Maddie Kelly, Jr., 3B/OF; Julianna Kostas, Jr., IF.

Strengths: Pitching.

Concerns: Tougher schedule.

Coach’s Outlook: “We have a very good group of committed, talented young athletes who are focused on working hard.”

Last year’s record: 17-5 (lost to Needham, 9-8, in the East Div. 1 quarterfinals)

Head coach: Tom Cobb (14th season)

Captains: Dylan Mann, Sr. LSM/faceoff; Tighe Van Lenten, Sr. G.

Key Returnees: Aiden Sears, Jr. D; Corey Tines, So. D; Trevor Surette, Sr. M; Henry Behrens, So. M; Harry Cwik, Jr. M; Ben Hoesley, Jr. A; Cam Jung, So. A; Max Craig, Jr. A

Strengths: Drive and determination. Masconomet’s graduating lacrosse class last year was not only the biggest during Cobb’s tenure; it was also probably the best. Making up for the loss of players like Kurt Hunziker, Wes Shresbury, Jake Gillespie, Julian Bandereck and Tim Towler will be difficult, but the Chieftains seem intent on continuing their success.

Concerns: A slow start. Masconomet didn’t get outside early in the preseason, and Cobb is unsure how some of his untested players will react in game situations and scenarios. The Chieftains also have to find out how the team will mesh together and who will be the go-to players.

Coach’s Outlook: “The team is really amped up to get going and show their worth. Goals for the year have been set for all individual players, units, team and the staff and team believe those will challenge everyone to excel and improve throughout the season. There are many challenges ahead in a short 10 weeks and the staff and team is looking forward to how everything will play out throughout the season.”

Last year’s record: 16-4 (lost to North Andover, 13-8, in the Div. 1 North first round)

Head coach: Al McCarthy (6th season, coached Masco from 2003-2006)

Captains: Amy Arnold, Sr. M, Zoe Cennami, Sr. A; Becca Phillips, Sr. M.

Key Returnees: Rachel Rogal, A; Kathleen Gillespie, M; Meg Collins, M; Sarah Yeakel, D; Lili Miller, G.

Strengths: Team unity. The Chieftains are a tight group both on and off the field and they understand what it means to play as a team. In addition, the Chieftains have a strong veteran presence.

Concerns: Defense. Masco lost some players to graduation on defense and McCarthy feels there will be an adjustment time for the new players to get accustomed to their positions.

Coach’s Outlook: “The players want to build upon the success we had last year, keep it going and bring our play to the next level. If we approach the season with our goal of giving it 100 percent every day, in practice, in games, we should see it translate to success on the field

Last year’s record: 6-11

Captains: Jon Cabour, Sr., second singles; Cam Netland, Jr., third singles.

Key Returnees: Alex Fizz, Fr., first singles; Nick Drago, Sr., first doubles; Jack Roscoe, Jr., first doubles.

This season will be successful if: The Chieftains come to practice every day ready to work hard and get better, support each other through the highs and lows and win more close matches then they lose.

Last year’s record: 12-3 (Lost in Division 1 North quarterfinals)

Head coaches: Paul Harrington/Mandy Maguire (First season)

Key returnees: Danielle Dunn, Jr.; Becca Costa, Soph.; Evelyn Harbert, Jr.; Samantha Moynihan, Jr.; Brooke Hunziker, Jr.; ErinJohnson, Jr.; Emily Fontaine, Jr.; Andreana Lantzakis, Jr.

This season will be successful if: The Chieftains can stay injury-free and maintain a hard work philosophy. The coaches love the chemistry of the team, and so far the work ethic has been very strong.
