Marblehead 2013 Spring Sports Previews

Last year’s record: 12-10 (Lost in Division 2 North second round)

Head coach: Jason Tarasuik (8th season)

Captains: Connor Green, Sr., 2B; Brian Daly, Sr., 1B/P; Brett LeBlanc, Sr., OF; Sam Stern, Sr., INF; Tom Koopman, Jr., C

Key Returnees: Andrew Raisner, Jr., P; Kyle Maulden, Jr., P; Jake Marsden, So., INF; Trey Blackmer, Jr., OF; John Cavolina, So., OF.

Strengths: Team speed. The Magicians have two members of the indoor track 4x200 relay team that ran at New Balance Indoor Nationals in Green and LeBlanc; They’ll certainly challenge opposing pitchers and catcher on the basepaths this season.

Concerns: Pitching experience. Marblehead graduated two top of the rotation starters in Braden Engstrom and Ross Gienieczko and they’ll need players to step up and fill those roles if they’re going to make it three straight trips to the state tournament.

Coach’s Outlook: “We’re young, we graduated 13 seniors and five NEC all-stars. But we like what we’ve seen so far.”

Last year’s record: 12-11 (Lost in the Div. 2 preliminary round to Wakefield)

Head coach: Johnny Gold (8th season)

Captains: Rachel McKay, Jr., CF; Olivia Vener, Jr., SS, Michaela Leblanc, Jr., P.

Key Returnees: Emily Messinger, So., C; McKenna Barrett, Jr., 1B; Emily Kulevich, Sr.

Strengths: Pitching, catching, shortstop and center field.

Concerns: The Magicians graduated a lot of seniors from last year, including eight starters.

Coach’s Outlook: “People always ask me how we’ll be, and I really don’t know until we play our first game. We have one senior, five juniors, three sophomores and four freshmen. I think we’ll be fine; it just takes some time.”

Last year’s record: 15-5 (lost to Medfield, 12-7, in the East Div. 2 first round)

Head coach: John Wilkens (12th season)

Captains: Ian Maag, Sr. M; Will Hughes, Sr. D; Zac Cuzner, Sr. M.
