Marblehead 2013 Spring Sports Previews

(Continued)

Key Returnees: Brooks Tyrrell, So. M; Nathan Maselek, So. G; Liam Gillis, Jr. D; Crandall Maxwell, Jr. D.

Strengths: Experience. Marblehead remains a relatively young team, but those young players on the Magicians’ roster got a lot of playing time last spring. Wilkens hopes that playing time can allow Marblehead to get off to a good start.

Concerns: Living up to expectations. Wilkens believes this team is capable of good things, but if the Magicians aren’t ready to play, then they could fall into a hole that is difficult to climb out of.

Coach’s Outlook: “Every year we want to challenge for the Northeastern Conference. Beverly is always at the top and a tough one to go after. We had a nice season last year. We lost to Medfield (after winning the first tournament game) in the tournament, so we want to continue to build on that and go further.”

GIRLS LACROSSE

Last year’s record: 16-5 (lost to Winchester, 16-7, in the Div. 2 North semifinals)

Head coach: Annie Pugh (3rd season)

Captains: Meggie Collins, Sr. M; Cassie Rodgers, Sr. M.

Key Returnees: Allie Foreman, Sr. G; Tyler Phillips, Sr. M; Kiley Fischer, Sr. A; Pamela Gregory, Sr. A; Ali Hanratty, Sr. A.

Strengths: The Magicians return a plethora of experience, including seven seniors who were starters a year ago for a team that advanced to the North semis.

Concerns: Becoming patient on offense. Pugh wants her team to be able to work together running a motion offense that allows for some freelancing when the Magicians have the ball.

Coach’s Outlook: “We have a goal and it’s to make it as far as possible. Having that experience of making it to the semifinals two years in a row makes it so much more real for them. They want to win. They know what it’s like to be so close.”
