Marblehead 2013 Spring Sports Previews



Last year’s record: 12-7 (Lost in Division 2 North first round)

Head coach: Elizabeth Foukal (6th season)

Captains: Alex Rothbard, Sr., doubles; Ben Goldstein, Sr., doubles.

Key Returnees: Chris Wigglesworth, Jr., first singles; Miles Barry, Jr., singles/doubles; Dimitri Vlassov, Soph., singles/doubles;Griffin Butterfield, Soph., singles/doubles; Jason Frost, Jr.,singles/doubles.

This season will be successful if: Marblehead can pull together as a unified team, with varsity and junior varsity players supporting each other on and off the court.


Last year’s record: 20-2 (Lost in Division 2 North semifinals)

Head coach: Tim Stonecipher (8th season)

Captains: Annie Ryan, Sr.; Meghan Gabel, Sr.

Other key players: Tory Booth, Soph.; Kelly Mealey, Soph.

This year will be successful if: The Magicians take it one match at a time and continue to keep the team focus.


Last year’s record: 6-1

Head coach: Brian Crowley (13th season)

Team captains: Josh Beloff, Sr., Long Jump/Triple Jump/200/Relay; Nate Fowler, Sr., Mile/800/Relay; Kevin Touch, Sr., 100/High Jump/Relay.

Key returnees: Ian McIver, Sr., 400/400 Hurdles/Relay; Conrad Rousseau, Jr., 110 Hurdles/400/Long Jump; Derek Dumais, Soph., Shot Put/Discus; Christopher Rodtz, Jr., Mile/Two Mile/Relay; John Howard, Sr., 800/Mile/Relay; A. J. Ernst, Fr., Mile/Two-Mile/Relay.

Coach’s outlook: “We’re in a rebuilding year. We have some strong upperclassmen, but as we did in the winter season we’re going to lean heavily on some very talented younger guys. There’s no question that we’ll be competitive, though.”

  • Keenan to resign to take Salem State job

    SALEM — State Rep. John Keenan said Tuesday he will resign from office Aug. 24 to take a new job as vice president of administration at Salem State University.
    His announcement ended months of speculation about where the five-term Democrat would end up after leaving the Legislature. As it turns out, he is leaving four months before his term would have expired.

  • Chism attorney wants 'youthful offender' indictments dismissed

    Philip Chism's attorney will argue that the state's "youthful offender" law, which requires that the Danvers teen be tried as an adult in last fall's rape and murder of his teacher, is unconstitutional.
    In documents filed Monday, defense attorney Denise Regan contends that the statute, enacted in 1996, creates two classes of children within the court system, distinguishing them based solely on the charge.

    BOSTON (AP) — They weren't castaways, but like the tourists on Gilligan's Island, a group of whale watchers expecting only a three-hour tour got much more after their boat was snagged by a lobster trap rope off Massachusetts and they were forced to spend a long night at sea.
