2014 Salem News Student Athlete Award profile: Sam Charette, Hamilton-Wenham

The Salem News

---- — Her teachers describe her as a “challenge seeker, leader, advanced critical thinker and dynamic writer.” But that only scratches the surface of the type of person Sam Charette really is.

A four-year varsity soccer and basketball player, Charette captained both teams this school year and took her hoop squad to the Division 2 North semifinals, the furthest the Generals have gone in the state playoffs since 2004.

Charette averaged a double-double on the hardcourt with 11.3 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. She had a game-high 19 points against Watertown in the semifinals and has the uncanny ability to make her teammates around her better.

In summary, Charette is looked to as a true leader both on and off the court.

”It’s definitely her competitive nature and her will to win,” basketball coach Jon DeMarco said of Charette. “I always knew that she was going to play her best when the game was on the line and that we could count on her to make a big play. In the Stoneham game (first round of state tourney), she hit the go-ahead basket to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. She always rose to the occasion when we needed her to step up.”

The 18-year-old Wenham native will take her basketball career to the next level this fall after accepting a scholarship to play at Endicott College.

A fearless defender on the soccer pitch, Charette guided the Generals to Division 3 North semifinals in each of the past two seasons and helped her team to a Cape Ann League title.

Charette was named to her school’s honor roll as a sophomore and again as a senior. She carries a 3.0 grade point average, and her favorite class is anatomy. She is a member of the Environmental Club, C.A.R.E., and she helps in organizing school events.
