2014 Salem News Student Athlete Award profile: Lily Roberts, Marblehead

The Salem News

---- — Being part of five student organizations and two varsity sports teams might seem like a lot to handle. That’s not the case for Marblehead senior Lily Roberts, though; she can handle anything you throw her way.

A two-year cross country captain, Roberts finished 10th at All-States last fall and led the Magicians to a fourth place finish as a team. She was named a Northeastern Conference and Salem News all-star for her stellar senior season. Roberts achieved the goal of breaking 19 minutes in a 5K at Eastern Mass. Division 4 Meet by placing fourth in 18:56.

Also an avid sailor, Roberts spends the spring season off the shores around Marblehead Neck.

”Lily is an outstanding young woman of sterling character,” said athletic director Mark Tarmey. “I truly feel that Lily epitomizes the spirit of this award.”

Academically, Roberts holds a 4.25 grade point average, is currently enrolled in four Advanced Placement classes (English, Calculus, French and American Government) and ranks in the top 5 percent of her class.

As a member of the National Honor Society, she’s achieved high honor roll status during every marking period of her high school career and scored 2130 out of 2400 on her SATs.

Roberts plays an active role in several student organizations at Marblehead High, including Mock Trial, Best Buddies Program, the National Arts Honors Society and the Junior Statesman Club.

True to her faith, Roberts serves as an Acolyte at the Church of the Advent in Boston and is member of the Old North Church Festival Chorus.

There’s little doubt that she will continue to excel at the collegiate level next year, both in the classroom and athletically if she chooses.
