2014 Salem News Student Athlete profile: Katie Monahan, Ipswich

It’s not exactly buried on the physical copy of her resume, but some of Katie Monahan’s most interesting and amazing accomplishments fall below her many academic and athletic achievements.

Among the 14 candidates from North Shore high schools, Monahan’s inclusion could be justified simply by looking at her performance in the classroom, on the soccer pitch and on the indoor and outdoor tracks. But what Monahan has done outside the boundaries of Ipswich only makes her case stronger.

In the summer of 2011, Monahan joined a group of high school students on a trip to Nicaragua, where they taught English to adults and students, delivered clothing to people in need and helped to renovate a community center. Beginning a year later, Monahan helped organize and became president of a nonprofit organization that started raising funds for a school in Ghana, Africa. Through various fundraisers, the group has raised over $12,000 for this school. Monahan and the group traveled to Ghana last summer to work at a summer camp and observe the improvements made at the school.

“This group is not part of a larger organization — they are the organization. They have not continued the work of others, they have initiated that work,” Ipswich English teacher Carla Panciera said. “Imagine being so young and having the energy, the skills and the compassion to spearhead this kind of activity. That’s Katie.”

Monahan, who will attend Union College next year, is also the type of student that excels in the classroom, maintaining a 4.1096 grade point average and ranking in the top 10 percent of her class. She is a member of the National Honor Society, won the St. Michael’s Book Award as a junior, and earned Achievement Awards in both Spanish and Physical Education.

Monahan is also a stellar athlete, being named Salem News all-star in both soccer and indoor track. She was named Most Valuable Player for the Tigers’ soccer team this fall and was a Cape Ann League all-star in outdoor track last year.
