The Salem News

Last year’s record: 18-7 (Lost in Division 3 North semifinal)

Head coach:: Kevin Canty (3rd season, 30-19)

Captains: Nick Bona, Sr., SS; Eric Razney, Sr., OF; Tommy Parsons, Sr., P.

Other key players: James Dellisola, Sr., 1B/P; Will Vegneron, Sr., 1B/P; Matt Renzulli, Jr., OF; Jhon Oliveira, Jr., OF; Robbie Carillo, Jr., OF: Mike Campitelli, Jr., C; J.T. Reiling, So., C; Matt Hale, Jr., P; Jake Barsey, Jr., DH/CI.

Strengths: Team speed and outfield depth. The Crusaders have their leading base stealer and CCL MVP Bona back, and guys like Carillo, Renzulli and centerfielder Razney must all be watched closely on the basepaths.

Concerns: Pitching depth. Parsons is the only full-time returning starting pitcher, and senior arms like Dellisola and Vigneron will be called on for bigger roles and more innings. Look for youngsters Reiling and Hale to pick up innings, and Carillo will augment the rotation after having success in spot starts last season.

Coach’s Outlook: “We’re excited. We have a good nucleus and some guys that want to prove that they can play. We’ll definitely have to run with all the power hitting we lost. Our goal is to win the league, make the tournament and do some damage; that doesn’t change. With the offense we have, if our pitching comes together we can get there.”

Last year’s record: 11-12

Head coach:: Paul Lyman (13th season)

Captains: Gianna Pizzano, Sr., 3B; Jen Crovo, Sr., 2B.

Key Returnees: Chandler Wilder, Sr., CF; Natalie Moore, Sr., P; Charlotte Powers, Sr., 1B; Bridget Corcoran, Sr., SS; Gabby Hart, Jr., C; Jenny Nasser, Jr., RF.

Strengths: The key for the Crusaders is their defense. The entire infield is back, a year older and wiser, and Gabby Hart returns behind the plate as another strong defender. Also, many of the players have had successful postseasons with their fall and winter teams, and Lyman is looking for the experience to carry through to the spring season.

Concerns: The injury factor has plagued the Crusaders in the past, so Lyman is hoping that his team can stay relatively healthy this year. As deep as the starting group is, the backups are pretty young with limited varsity experience.

Coach’s Outlook: “We’re fortunate in the sense that we’re a veteran team, so not being outside just yet won’t hurt us too much. We open up with two very strong league games against Arlington Catholic and Cardinal Spellman.”

Last year’s record: 11-10 (lost to Hanover, 18-1, in East Division 3 first round)

Head coach:: Ralph Ruocco (1st season)

Captains: Kyle Russell, Sr. A; Ben Kaupp, Sr. D.

Key returnees: Chris Napolitano, So. A; Chris Carney, Jr. A; Ryan Coccoluto, So. A; Mark Nalesnik, Sr. M; Coleman Hebert, Jr. M; Joey Gray, Sr. M; Kevin Hannon, Sr. M; Christopher Cummings, Sr. M; Dan Hannon, So. M; Teddy Booras, Sr. M; Nick Coccoluto, Sr. M; Tyler Fouhey, Sr. M; Nick Gulla, Sr. M; Josh Cameron, Jr. M; Jimmy Digiulio, Jr. M; Peter Choi, Jr. M; Brandon DeBerardinis, Jr. D; Tom Delaney, Sr. D; Dylan Maida, Jr. G.

Strengths: Returning players. The Crusaders welcome back 21 returning varsity players from a team that qualified for its first tournament in program history.

Concerns: Adjusting to a new coach. Ruocco is new to the Fenwick program but has experience at the varsity high school level, most recently at Marshwood High School in South Berwick, Maine.

Coach’s Outlook: Even though it’s his first season at the helm, Ruocco hopes to build on the Crusaders’ success from last year.

Last year’s record: 13-7 (lost to Marblehead, 21-5, in the North Division 2 quarterfinals)

Head coach:: Karen Guillemette (8th season)

Captains: Annette Ruggeiro, Sr. M; Natalie Emerson, Sr. C; Tessa McLaughlin, Sr. M.

Key Returnees: Merry Harrington, So. A; Emily Rocker, Jr. D; Jackie Hart, Jr. D; Lexie Rose, Jr. A.

Strengths: Senior captains. Two of Guillemette’s captains have been playing on varsity since freshman year and the other has been playing since she was a sophomore.

Concerns: Youth. The Crusaders have become a steady program under Guillemette, but this year there are a lot of underclassmen and inexperienced players on the roster. Fenwick is also breaking in a new goalie.

Coach’s Outlook: “I guess it’s the same as every year: to try to win the league, make the tournament and do some damage. I think we have the team that can do it. We have a hard road to get there, but I think we can get there.”

Last year’s record: 9-0

Head coach:: Ali Souris (1st season)

Captains: Arianna Maida, Sr., Distance; Caitlyn Parrott, Sr., Sprints; Katie Bunopane, Sr., Throws

Other key returnees: Alexa Pelligrini, Sr., Sprints; Sydney Packard, Soph., Distance

Coach’s outlook: Fenwick is coming off an undefeated championship season in the Catholic Central League. “I have a positive outlook because the athletes are committed to discipline and training to remain competitive,” said Souris.

Last year’s record: 8-1

Captains: Eric Loehle, Sr., Distance; Charlie Maistrellis, Sr., Sprints/Jumps; Nick Tambini, Sr., Hurdles/Multi-events

Other key returnees: Mitch Rivers, Soph., Hurdles/Multi-events; Myles Connor, Jr., High Jump/Javelin

Coach’s outlook: “These athletes are ready to remain competitive in the CCL and on the state stage. I have a positive outlook for the season.”
