The eighth annual Trails and Sails event is on deck for an extra weekend of fun this summer.
Shining a spotlight on the region's maritime history, the Essex National Heritage Commission has expanded to two weekends of free activities for locals and visitors including hikes, walks, sails, paddles, guided tours and open house visits.
Beginning on Friday, Sept. 18, to Sunday, Sept. 20, and continuing the next Friday, Sept. 25, to Sunday, Sept. 27, this year promises new activities such as a guided tour through the Rocky Neck Artist Colony and Family Fun on the Erica Lee through Boat Camp of Newburyport. Also, there will be a tour of old burial grounds with the Essex County Ghost Project.
Back by popular demand is a cruise on Gloucester Harbor on the Schooner Lannon with Capt. Tom Ellis. Watch a vintage baseball demonstration with the Essex Baseball Club using 1861 rules or go on a mushroom hunt with expert Tim Clark in Hamilton.
A finished schedule for the Trails and Sails Weekends has not yet been established. For more information, visit EssexHeritage.org or call 978-740-0444.
