Nearing its 50th anniversary, Salem Heritage Days celebrates Witch City's rich history with a jam-packed festival of fun for residents and visitors alike.
For 10 days this summer (Aug. 1-10) the city will host concerts, games and kids events at affordable prices. While Heritage Days was developed as a celebration for residents, visitors young and old can enjoy the festivities — even the dogs are invited.
Squeezing in more than 40 events, nearly all the festivities from last year will be back in 2009, including the popular Dog Show, Kid's Night and Scooperbowl, where samples from many of the North Shore's ice cream parlors will satisfy the sweet tooth. The Young Dance Company will also be returning for its 39th year performing at the festival.
Another favorite shines the spotlight on athletes as young as 5 and 6 for the Youth Triathlon, which tests participants who will swim, bike and run their way to the finish line. Adults can also show off their stamina in the one-mile swim.
For those with a stomach that never quits, Salem's Best Pizza Competition is back — it is up to you to decide who serves the best pizza in town.
IF YOU GO
Arrive early. Some events, especially the pizza-tasting contest and ice cream Scooperbowl, are extremely popular.
Bring the kids. With more than 40 events, there's something for everyone, young and old, and all events are family friendly.
