SALEM — A North Shore man died late Monday afternoon when he lost control of his vehicle on a rainy Swampscott Road and slammed sideways into a large pine tree.
The force of the collision threw the vehicle onto its side and snapped the tree about halfway up the trunk, causing it to fall across the windshield and trapping the driver beneath.
Police, fire and emergency responders, which were alerted to the accident at 4:37 p.m., rushed to the scene where they cut the tree away from the car and extricated the driver from the wreckage, but he was already deceased.
Salem police declined to identify the victim or his hometown until next of kin could be notified.
As of 8 p.m., Monday, Swampscott Road remained closed to through traffic, and local and state police accident investigation teams were still working to determine the cause of the crash.
