Interchange remains closed after asphalt truck crash

MSP photoAn overturned tanker truck lies on the roadside as its cargo of liquid asphalt continues to flow from the ruptured tank. The accident caused a massive traffic tie-up starting about 4 p.m. Sunday on the northbound exit ramp from Route 128 to Interstate 95 north in Peabody. State police said they expected the ramp to remain closed for an undetermined period.

PEABODY — A liquid asphalt truck rolled over on the ramp from Route 128 North to I-95 North in Peabody Sunday afternoon, shutting down traffic for a still undetermined period of time.

The Massachusetts State Police said the driver sustained minor injuries, but thousands of gallons of asphalt spilled across the road.

As a result, the ramp was closed at 4 p.m. State police officials said it will most likely remain closed overnight, and possibly for an extended period of time.

Police said the hazardous materials team from the Peabody Fire Department are at the scene and working to contain the heavy, black, molasses-like liquid.

Police scanner reports indicated earlier that heavy wreckers were dispatched from Coady's Towing Service in Lawrence and were able to right and remove the tanker.

State police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
