SALEM — Boil and bubble, a man's in trouble — for allegedly clobbering another man over the head with a witch's cauldron Saturday night in downtown Salem.

Salem officers were on patrol at the intersection of Essex Street and Hawthorne Boulevard around 11:30 p.m. when the victim, bleeding from the head, ran up to them and said he was attacked by Cory Nelson.

The two men had been inside a cottage behind 125 Essex St., where Crow Haven Corner, a shop that sells witchcraft-related items, is located.

Inside the cottage were a number of decorative cauldrons and candle containers — and Nelson, stumbling around.

Police say Nelson, 35, of Everett, smelled of alcohol. He was arrested.

The victim had suffered a cut to his head, but refused to let police photograph his injury and refused to be evaluated by an ambulance crew that had been called to the scene.

Nelson pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, to wit: cauldron, at his arraignment Monday in Salem District Court.
