MARBLEHEAD — Two Arizona motorcyclists who, by all rights, could have been the middle ingredient in a car-motorcycle sandwich, actually walked away from their head-scratching crash with relatively minor injuries.

At about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Marblehead 911 Center received multiple reports of a crash involving either a rollover or a car on top of a motorcycle on Atlantic Avenue near Stowaway Sweets.

Police patrols arrived on scene to find a car propped precariously on top of a motorcycle in the middle of the outbound lane.

The two people on the motorcycle, who were visiting Marblehead from Arizona, escaped without serious injuries and were ultimately brought to police headquarters to make arrangements for a ride.

With the assistance of the Marblehead Fire Department, the car driver was freed, treated by a crew from Atlantic Ambulance Service and transported to a local hospital.

Atlantic Avenue was completely closed for roughly an hour and a half while officers investigated and the tow company worked to clear the road.

The motorcycle and the car were towed by Bill’s Auto Clinic to its Salem facility.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Marblehead police.
