DANVERS — The Senior Center is sponsoring a debate between incumbent state Rep. Ted Speliotis, a Danvers Democrat, and Danvers Republican and Selectman Dan Bennett, in their bid to represent Danvers, Topsfield and Ward 6 in West Peabody on Beacon Hill.
The debate is scheduled for Oct. 19, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the Senior Center, 25 Stone St. Candidates will take questions from the audience, and make short opening and closing remarks.
The morning debate will be followed by one scheduled that evening in Peabody City Hall, in a forum sponsored by The Salem News.
Bennett had challenged Speliotis, who is running for his eighth term, to debate him at Danvers Town Hall, and had reserved the Toomey hearing room for that purpose. Bennett said he was responding to Speliotis' challenge in The Salem News that the incumbent was willing to debate his opponent whenever, wherever and however many times he wanted.
However, Speliotis said it would be absurd to attend a debate sponsored by his challenger in a place where Bennett regularly conducts town business, and declined the earlier offer.
