IPSWICH – The waters of Crane Beach were cleared of swimmers Sunday morning after a lifeguard spotted what was believed to be a fin in nearby waters.
After swimmers were out of the water following the sighting at 9 a.m., two boats were deployed and the Ipswich Harbormaster's office was notified.
Ipswich police and fire crews also joined the search, with police using a drone.
"After an extensive search of the area, no sharks were found and the beaches were reopened. Marine units will remain on patrol throughout the day, " a statement from police said.
Police also reminded swimmers to remain aware of their surroundings, do not venture past knee deep water and do not swim where seals are present.
In an unrelated incident, an injured seal was found alive on Little Neck Beach. Ipswich Animal Control responded and with assistance from the Seacoast Science Center determined the nature of the injury to be naturally occurring and not from a predator or a boat strike.
Ipswich Animal Control reported the Seacoast Science Center responded to render aid to the injured seal.
