SALEM — With a week to go before the preliminary election, two candidate forums are scheduled for tonight.

The Salem Education Foundation is hosting a 7 p.m. forum for School Committee candidates at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem, 13 Hawthorne Blvd.

There is a large field in the school board race this year and a lot at stake as the school system heads into the second year of a turnaround effort.

The field includes incumbents Janet Crane, Lisa Lavoie and Brendan Walsh and challengers Katie Casiglia, Rachel Hunt, Rick Johnson, Ken Sawicki and Patrick Schultz.

Karen Andreas, regional publisher of North of Boston Media Group, which includes The Salem News, will serve as moderator. Translation services and child care will be provided.

Over at the Moose Lodge, 50 Grove St., the Mack Park Neighborhood Association is sponsoring a 6:30 p.m. forum for Ward 6 City Council candidates.

Incumbent Paul Prevey is being challenged by Beth Gerard and Sawicki.

The Tuesday, Sept. 17, preliminary election will pare the School Committee candidates from eight to six for the Nov. 5 final. The field in Ward 6 will be cut next week from three to two.
