A 30-inch city of Salem water main broke in the vicinity of 2 Orchard Lane and Liberty Street in Danvers at about 11 a.m. today, forcing local and state police to shut down the ramp leading from Route 62 East (Elliott Street) to Route 128 North.
The force of the water buckled the roadway and washed out gravel. Water cascaded down the street, which is being used as the primary connection between Route 62 and Route 128 North during a state interchange project.
The water caused the intersection of Elliott and Liberty streets to flood, and it was closed for a short time before being reopened. Crews managed to shut the water main around noon so they could make repairs.
Salem residents may notice some discolored water and residents may want to refrain from washing clothes today, according to the Salem Department of Public Services.
