SALEM — The Salem YMCA is closed today after an apparent gas explosion in the street outside the facility on Sewall Street.
The Y staff posted an alert to members via Facebook shortly after 7 a.m., saying the building would be closed for the day.
The notice said the Fire Department did find elevated levels of Co2 within the building, following a gas explosion that had occurred outside.
The city of Salem later posted a notice that Salem police had closed a section of Essex Street between Washington and North streets where National Grid was working on a gas leak.
