To the editor:

“We can do better.”

With these four words, Salem’s own Lisa Peterson announced her campaign to unseat incumbent and recent presidential hopeful Seth Moulton. For many of us, a challenger to Moulton’s seat in Congress has been a long time coming.

Those of us who live in Salem and the surrounding communities pride ourselves on being an open and progressive community with people who get excited to fight for what is right. We have the privilege to live in a beautifully diverse and accepting home. It’s time we have a representative in Congress who demonstrates these morals. It’s time we have a representative who will spend less time reflecting on his own accomplishments and more time creating opportunities for us to have our own. It’s time we have a representative who rejects Wall Street donations and who can’t be bought by the promise of election.

Peterson clearly states in her kick-off campaign video “WE are running for Congress.” This is a far cry from our current representative’s decision to pursue a vain, selfish and pointless run for the Democratic nomination for president. Peterson has proved herself as a devoted local politician and volunteer. I and many of us in this community look forward to her being sworn in as the next congressional representative for the 6th District of Massachusetts.
