To the editor:

On behalf of the Salem police K-9 unit, I would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who helped to make our K-9 fundraiser a huge success. Our K-9 unit is funded entirely by donations and fundraising. We are overwhelmed by the continued support we receive.

Dog-parents everywhere know how expensive it can be for the upkeep of your furry four-legged family members. It’s the same for our K-9 unit; we’ve got three hungry mouths to feed, constant training to do, equipment to buy and operational deployments to respond to.

This past Friday, friends of the Salem police K-9 unit gathered at the Loyal Order of the Moose Family Center for a fundraiser. The event featured two comedians, a buffet-style dinner, raffles and door prizes and because of your generosity, we raised almost $10,000. All of the funds raised go to support our three K-9 partners: Axel, Turbo and Ekho.

Many thanks to the friends of the K-9 unit and our business community for donating all the great prizes and for the many individuals who stepped in to help decorate, clean up and serve the dinner.

And finally, a very special shout-out to RoseMary O’Connor, Don Famico and Andy and Cheryl LaPointe, who were instrumental in making the K-9 fundraiser a resounding success!
