To the editor:
My hat is off to Registrar of Deeds John O’Brien, who, together with the Lewy Body Dementia Association, sponsored a presentation by MGH neurologist and Lewy Body specialist Stephen Gomperts, M.D., called “Lifting the Fog From Lewy Body Dementia,” on July 9 at the Registry of Deeds. Over 90 people showed up for a very informative talk.
Dr. Gomperts explained the differences between Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease dementia, and Lewy Body dementia, both in the brain and in symptoms. He touched on some of the latest research, and explained that as yet there are no cures for any of these diseases, only treatment of symptoms. He warned people which drugs should be avoided by LBD patients, and gave many other practical tips. He generously answered every question from the audience.
As your readers know from a prior article in your paper, Mr. O’Brien suffers from Lewy Body dementia, but his grace and competence were on display during his remarks to the group. It takes a lot of caring to want to get the word out to help others, and Mr. O’Brien personifies that.
Thank you, Mr. Registrar.
