To the editor:
“Self-defeating” is the word that sprang to mind when I read that MassDOT is considering opening HOV-lanes to single-occupancy vehicles in order to “ease congestion” during the projected two years of construction on the Tobin Bridge (“MassDOT weighs two-year HOV-lane access,” Salem News, June 19).
If commuters want to use HOV lanes, they should carpool. That’s the whole point.
We need fewer vehicles on the road — because of congestion, yes, but also, much more importantly, because we are killing the planet and endangering human existence by pouring carbon into the atmosphere.
Catering to those who prefer to drive alone in their cars keeps more cars on the road, and slows the commutes of bus riders who are keeping their carbon footprints down.
