Mayor Rivera: Never forget Game 5 in ‘04 ALCS

Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera welcome guests to the official opening of the Lawrence Food Truck Park.

Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera has been a life-long Red Sox fan and Pedro Martinez was his favorite player.

As mayor, my favorite Pedro Martinez moment was when I was a young staffer working for then Mayor Patricia Dowling when my friend, then State Representative David Torrisi and Mayor Dowling greeted Pedro in a Lawrence school surrounded by kids. He was gracious and the kids loved him. He looked like them and his English sounded like theirs, and they saw themselves in him. It was a great moment for Lawrence and I dare say for Pedro.

However, my favorite Pedro “moment” as a Red Sox fan has to be those seven innings he pitched of the 14-inning Game 5, against the New York Yankees to breathe life back into a demoralized Red Sox Nation. A redemptive outing for his overstayed outing that lost us the 2003 ACLS. Even though Wakefield got the win, those seven innings were the toehold for the Game 5 win and it reminded the Red Sox who they were and why they could win it all, and then they did.
