BOYS BASKETBALL

NST/EA 76, Minuteman 70 (OT): Trailing by 10 points at the half, NST/EA (1-1) rallied thanks to strong defense by Matt Herlihy, who held Minuteman's Troy Newton (30 points) to just 10 points in the second half and overtime. Elijah Alfred (10 points) grabbed 13 boards, Jazmanny Sanchez pulled down 10 rebounds to go with his 14 points and Jordan Mendez and Mark McCarthy (eight assists) led the way with 18 points each. Sanchez was 7 for 8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Danvers 70, Swampscott 50: St. John's Prep transfer Nick McKenna scored 25 points and added four assists for the Falcons, who improved to 2-0. Senior center George Merry pitched in 14 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocked shots, while junior point guard Eric Martin contributed eight points and four assists.

LE 77, Salem 71: Salem point guard Christian Dunston had a spectacular all-around game with seven rebounds, six steals and five assists to go with a team-high 17 points, but the Witches dropped to 0-2. Emilio Beato finished with five rebounds and 14 points while Marvin Baez chipped in 15 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Ipswich 57, Lynnfield 29: The Tigers (2-0) handed Lynnfield its first loss of the season as no Pioneer was able to convert more than a single field goal. Julia Davis (seven boards) led all scorers with 15 points while Shannon McFayden chipped in 12 points. Brigid O'Flynn led the team in rebounds with eight while Masey Zegarowski had a strong floor game with seven assists.

H-W 38, Amesbury 29: Sophomore Samantha Charette scored a team-high eight points to go with four blocks and eight rebounds for H-W (1-1) while fellow sophomore Suzanne Rose (four points) and teammate Sophie Prince (two points) controlled the floor.

Minuteman 46, NST/EA 43 (OT): Kim Schuyler was the high scorer for winless NST/EA (0-2) with 19 points.

Lynn English 44, Salem 22: The Lady Bulldogs doubled up the Witches (0-2) despite a breakout performance by freshman Jaclyn Panneton, who had a team-high 15 rebounds and 11 points. Alix Bryant added seven points.

Marblehead 51, Saugus 21: Kathryn Digiammarino scored 15 points, Emily Freedland added 12 and Lindsey Cohen, McKenna Barrett and Sidney Plyner did the work on the boards for Marblehead. The Magicians improved to 2-0 with the victory.
