BOYS BASKETBALL
Beverly boys basketball coach Scott Lewis figured he’d earn his 100th win as Panthers sometime during the 2012-13 season. But even he wasn’t sure it would be this early in the year.
Last night’s 60-47 win over Saugus put Lewis at the century mark, and continued his team’s excellent start to the season at 8-2.
“Our guys were great about with the congratulations. With such a young team, we weren’t sure exactly where we’d be and guys are stepping up. We’re really happy,” said Lewis.
Junior forward Jon Berchoff scored 19 points and handed out four assists for Beverly while senior Cam Rogers had 10 points and nine rebounds. Junior Nick Cross was also solid with 14 points.
“Congratulations to Scott. They outcoached us and out played us and they do a great job,” said Saugus coach Paul Moran. “This might be my last time playing against Scott’s teams (Saugus is moving to the Cape Ann League) and I’ll miss it.”
MYSTIC VALLEY 69, NORTH SHORE TECH/ESSEX AGGIE 42: Elijah Alfred (10 points and seven boards) and Jordan Mendez (17 points) led NST/EA (0-10).
Swampscott 45, Peabody 39: Senior Ben Martinez scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds but the Tanners dipped to 3-7 in a defensive struggle. Jared McCarron and Matt Correale each added seven points for Peabody.
Ipswich 63, Pentucket 50: Erik Fyrer was unstoppable for Ipswich (2-8) pouring in 22 points to go with 13 rebounds, four blocks and four assists. Ben Rice and Matt Jaeger added 11 points apiece.
Salem 53, Marblehead 41: Senior Billy Muse had a season-high 16 points and Emilio Beato (six points) grabbed 11 rebounds as Salem bumped its record 7-3. Marvin Baez added eight assists and five points while Christian Dunston finished with eight boards, five assists and six points. Marblehead (4-6) got 16 points from Matt Millett and Jeremy Gillis added eight points and five rebounds.
Hamilton-Wenham 58, Georgetown 50: Henry Eagar led the Generals (5-5) with 16 points and 10 rebounds, James Foye chipped in 13 points and Nikos Lara was also in double-figures with 10 points.
Arl. Catholic 63, Bishop Fenwick 52: Matt Costello led the Crusaders with 13 points and five rebounds while Joe Buccheri finished with nine points and five assists.
Masconomet 53, Lynnfield 40: The Chieftains (5-6) knocked off the Pioneers (8-3) on the road. Senior Zach Turcotte had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and junior Alberto Arenaza added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Danvers 68, Lynn Classical 50: The Falcons led by 23 at the half, but Classical briefly made things interesting before Danvers pulled away. Nick Bates led Danvers (9-0) with 21 points and nine rebounds, and Eric Martin contributed 15 points, seven assists and four rebounds.
Vinny Clifford chipped in with 13 points and six assists, Kieran Beck added 11 points and four rebounds, and Danny Connors scored eight points for the Falcons.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Hamilton-Wenham 52, Georgetown 48: Haley Willis, Cassandra Fibbe, Sue Rose (nine assists), Catherine Ecker (seven rebounds), Caroline Cook and Sam Charette (12 rebounds) all helped the Generals (6-3) hold Georgetown scoreless in the fourth quarter. Willis led H-W with 15 points and Fibbe added 14 points as the Generals overcame a 48-42 fourth-quarter deficit.
Beverly 53, Saugus 43: Junior Mary Cate Flaherty scored a season high 14 points and played well on the defensive end as the Panthers (5-7) won for the fifth time in their last six outings. Bridget Keaton and Andrea Zelano each added eight points for the winners.
Masconomet 72, Lynnfield 44: Hannah Kiernan led the Chieftains (9-2) with 17 points to go along with seven assists, six steals and four rebounds. Senior captain Claudia Marsh added 14 points, six rebounds and two steals, while Nicole Femino finished with nine rebounds and six points as Masconomet was able to get the win in a complete team effort.
Peabody 42, Swampscott 40: Junior Carolyn Scacchi poured in 17 points and added 18 rebounds as the tanners move to 7-2 overall. Courtney Bua, who finished with 14, was key on the defensive end as the game was close the entire way through. Alex Lomasney (seven points) hit two free throws in the final seconds to give Peabody the edge and the win.
Ara Talkov had 17 points for Swampscott, while Alexa Goldman added nine.
Marblehead 50, Salem 47: The Magicians were able to overcome a first half deficit to take a win in overtime. Tied 42 all at the end of regulation, Emily Freedland hit a big three pointer in OT and Marblehead made its foul shots to ensure the victory. Freedland had 15 points on the night along with eight steals and seven rebounds, McKenna Barret finished with a team-high 17 points and 18 rebounds, while Mia Bongiorno added 15 points and seven rebounds.
Jaclyn Panneton finished with 17 points for the Witches (3-6), while Rachel Zipper added 11.
Arlington Catholic 58, Bishop Fenwick 39: Despite a strong first half, the Crusaders (8-4) couldn’t withstand AC’s powerful offense in the final two quarters. Kate Lipka finished with a team-high 14 points, while Chandler Wilder added 11.
Danvers 51, Lynn Classical 48: The Falcons have won three of their last four contests and have found their rhythm. Freshman Hannah Llewellyn had 13 points and was huge a spark offensively off the bench for Danvers (6-4). Kasey Sherry had a game-high 16 points, while Emily McNulty (nine point) guarded Classical’s top player and held her to just five points.
BOYS HOCKEY
North Reading 4, Bishop Fenwick 1: The host Hornets jumped ahead 3-0 before Brandon DeBaradenis scored in the second period. Nick Finan earned an assist on the goal and Pat O’Leary made 17 saves but Fenwick fell to 2-8.
SWIMMING
St. John’s Prep 96.5, Lincoln-Sudbury 80.5: The Eagles prevailed on the road.
Marblehead 117, Beverly 69: Harrison Rodts, Ryan Alexander and Charlie Selzter were all double-winners for Marblehead (6-0). Rodts topped the 100 fly (54.87) and the 500 freestyle (5:18.88), Ryan Alexander took the 200 freestyle (1:57.94) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.36) and Seltzer was top dog in the 200 IM (2:05.90) and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.68).

Peabody 104, Lynn Classical 74: Alex Strakosha won the 100 freestyle and 200-IM for Peabody (5-0-1) and he also swam a leg in the winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay team along with Alex Guay, Pat Jwanowski and Zack Melville. Other first place finishes for the Tanners came from Nina Pappacostas in the 200 freestyle, Jwanskowski in the 50 freestyle, Paige Hayward in diving, Meghan Lurvey in the 100 backstroke and Maria Strakosha in the 100 fly.
Salem 94, Swampscott 89: Julie Nguyen won the 100 fly, the 100 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle for Salem (3-4) while Kevin Clyne won the 100 freestyle and the 50 freestyle. Chase Duffin swam a personal best 26.94 in the 50 freestyle for the Witches.
For Swampscott Emily Guo won the 200 IM in a time of 2:41.02.
BOYS TRACK
Hamilton-Wenham 69, Lynnfield 17: Seven boys took home victories as H-W (1-3) got its first win of the season. Tyler Mulley won the hudles (6.09), Kyle Maybury topped the 40 (5.17), Sam Erhard was first in the two mile (12:09), Wyatt Howell won the 300 ( 43.9), Kevin Rutigliano captured the 600 (1:46), Jack Bltachford took the 1000 (3:05) and Matt Gillis was the top finisher in the mile (5:05).
Bishop Fenwick 64, Archbishop Williams 19: Eric Razney won the dash (7.03), Bryan Mendes was first in the 600 (1:29) and Dan Deschenes topped the 1000 (3:04) for Bishop Fenwick (5-1). Also taking firsts for the Crusaders were Brendan McCarthy in the mile (5:36), Andrew Carlin in the high jump (5-4) and Nick Tambini in the high hurdles (9.28).
St. John’s Prep 57, B.C. High 38: The Eagles move to 4-0 in a battle of the unbeaten. Brendan Massey was first in the 1000, while Liam Dow (4:35) won the mile. Tom O’Shea (4:35.1) placed second in the mile and also took the 2 mile along with Dow and Tim Loehner with a time of 10:04. Evan Dombrowski won the shot (51-6), Will Stark placed first in the 600 (1:28.50) and Will Raven was first in the high hurdles.
GIRLS TRACK
H-W splits: The Generals (3-2) handled Lynnfield, 59-27 but fell to Pentucket, 44-42 despite double-winner Lily Shiland, who was first in the high jump (4-10) and the 40-hurdles (6.62). Other winners for H-W were Vanessa Morris in the dash (5.81), Sarah Duffy in the 2-mile (13:05), Emily Weigand in the 600 (1:51), Meghan Stone in the 1000 (3:45) and Rachel Gershlak in the shot put (28-11).
Bishop Fenwick 45, Archbishop Williams 31: The Crusaders bumped their record to 5-1 as Andrea Klos won the 600 (1:58), Meredith Harrington topped the high jump (4-4), Natalie Emerson captured the high hurdles (10.33) and Maire Guinee won the shot put.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 45, Gordon 39: Jennifer White (16 points) hit a lay-up to give the Gulls (10-4) the lead with 3:19 to play to pull out the rivalry win. Brooke Kratche had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Gordon, which played all five starters for the entire 40 minutes of game.
Framingham St. 84, Salem St. 67: Bridget Dullea led the Vikings with 15 points and five rebounds but the hosts pulled away in the second half. Rachael Carter had ten points and Ginny Flemming added 13 for Salem State (8-8).
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Gordon 70, Endicott 63: Shaun Roach poured in 16 points off the bench to help Gordon (10-5) emerge with the win in this North Shore rivalry. David Dempsey scored 18 and Park Thomas added 12 with seven rebounds. John Henault led Endicott with 15.
Salem State 80, Framingham State 77: Justin Nieves hit a 3-points with three seconds left on the clock to lift the Vikings (10-5) to a conference road win. Nieves had 15 total points and Bryan Ortiz hit four treys and scored 18 off the bench for Salem State and Andrew White added nine.
SKIING
St. John’s Prep wins two: Bobby Holmes (19.83), Joe Cavallaro (19.96) and Carl Scwartz (20.0) led the Eagles (4-0) to wins over North Andover (109-26) and Austin Prep (109-2).
COLLEGE HOCKEY
Salem State 5, UMass Dartmouth 1: John Marsters and Derek Crocker scored two minutes apart in the third period to lift the Vikings (8-5-1). Chad Goodwin and Kyle Phelan also scored and Ryan Sutliffe made 22 saves.
