A pair of local golfers find themselves well within striking distance after Day 1 of the 119th US Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.

Nick Maccario, a Haverhill native and graduate of St. John's Prep, joined Swampscott's Steven DiLisio in shooting a more-than-respectable 3-over par 73 in his opening round on Monday. The two talented linksmen currently sit in a tie for 102nd in the uber competitive 300-plus man field, eight strokes back of the lead. Just 27 golfers in total managed to go under par.

Maccario played his front nine at 1-under but had four bogeys after the turn en route to his final score; DiLisio also managed a pair of birdies to go with five bogeys. Fellow Swampscott native Christian Emmerich didn't fare quite as well, registering three double-bogeys in the midst of a 12-over par 82. All three golfers will be back out there on Tuesday with hopes of inching up the leaderboard.
