Modern Marvels focuses on highlighting the top athletes, with a multi-sport, focus, from each area high school. We choose one boy and one girl with two honorable mentions in each category.

Boys Athlete of the 21st Century

BRENDAN FLAHERTY

Class of 2013

• Three sport Northeastern Conference all-star in football, indoor track and lacrosse

• Let Panthers to Super Bowl football titles as a sophomore (2010) and unbeaten champs as a senior (2012)

• Beverly’s all-time leader in total touchdowns (61), points (380) and rushing TDs (41)

• Second in career rushing yardage (3,503) for Panthers and 4,222 yard of total offense for career

• Team MVP in indoor track as a senior

• Won 300 meters at Mass. State Coaches meet and also excelled in shot put

• Two-time conference all-star in lacrosse

• Named First Team All-American in lacrosse as a senior after scoring 56 goals and 28 assists

HONORABLE MENTION

Brendan Fullerton

Class of 2005

• Team captain in golf, hockey and baseball and was MVP in all three as a senior

• Third all-time leading scorer in Beverly boys hockey history with 143 points (70 goals, 73 assists)

• Pitcher/shortstop was named MVP of Eastern Mass. Baseball All-Star Game as a senior

Pat Bailey

Class of 2007

• Two-time Northeastern Conference football Player of the Year

• Salem News co-Player of the Year as a senior is team’s all-time leading rusher (3,684 yards)

• Picked up lacrosse as a junior and became two-time NEC all-star

NICOLE WOODS

Girls Athlete of the 21st Century

Class of 2013

• One of only two athletes this century named Salem News Player of the Year in two different sports

• Two-time Field Hockey Player of the Year was a three-year Northeastern Conference all-star

• Two-time team captain for Orange-and-Black in field hockey led team to four straight NEC crowns in the fall

• Ice hockey center is Beverly’s all-time leader in goals (84), assists (85) and points (169)

• Co-MVP of the Northeastern Hockey League

• Tallied a then-record 70 points during her senior season

• MIAA/Boston Bruins Sportsmanship Award recipient as a senior

• Was also a lacrosse standout in the spring

HONORABLE MENTION

Kerry O’Neill

Class of 2004

• Beverly High Hall of Famer was a star in field hockey, girls basketball and girls lacrosse

• Northeastern Conference all-star in all three sports

• Had over 100 career goals in lacrosse and was conference MVP as a senior

Caitlin Harty

Class of 2014

• Superstar on the soccer pitch as well as indoor and outdoor track

• Northeastern Conference soccer MVP as a senior

• Unbeaten in 300 and 600 indoors and 400 outdoors as a senior
