Modern Marvels focuses on highlighting the top athletes, with a multi-sport, focus, from each area high school. We choose one boy and one girl with two honorable mentions in each category.

Hayley Dowd

Class of 2013

• Peabody High and North Shore all-time career leader in goals (148) and points (204) for girls soccer

• 2011 Gatorade Massachusetts High School Girls Soccer Player of the year and NSCAA All-American

• Three-time Salem News Girls Soccer Player of the Year

• Captain of 2011 undefeated state championship team that was ranked No. 5 in the country

• Tanner girls soccer team went 75-5-5 in her four varsity seasons

• Guard for 2009-10 girls basketball team that went 19-4, averaging 10 points and 3 steals

• Northeastern Conference and Salem News all-star in track, winning league dash championship in 2013

• Graduated from Boston College among Eagles all-time women's soccer leading scorers and plays professionally in Europe


Catarina Rocha

Class of 2013

• Foot Locker Cross Country All-American and Gatorade Massachusetts Runner of the Year in 2012

• Won 8 Eastern Mass. and 7 All-State titles in cross country, mile and 2-mile; 9 total Salem News Runner of the Year awards.

• Set All-State indoor all-time record in the mile (4:49.14); Moynihan Student-Athlete of the Year was NEC soccer all-star as freshman.

Heather Popp

Class of 2005

• Girls lacrosse pioneer set numerous records, scoring 72 points in a season and graduated with 229

• Two-sport captain spearheaded Greater Boston League championship girls soccer squad

• Inducted into Peabody High Hall of Fame in 2018

Boys Athlete of the 21st Century

Jeff Allison

Class of 2003

• Baseball America's national high school Player of the Year went 9-0 as a senior with a 0.00 earned run average and 142 strikeouts

• USA Today All-American struck out 20 in a no-hitter against Cambridge

• Struck out a school record 378 batters in four varsity seasons, amassing an overall record of 24-3

• First round draft choice of the Florida Marlins (16th overall)

• Fastball averaged 95 miles per hour in 2003 and frequently reached 98 on scouts radar guns

• Batted over .350 for career and drove in six runs in a single game against Somerville

• Greater Boston League basketball all-star averaged 12 points per game as a senior

• Key contributor on only PHS boys hoop team to reach Division 1 North final as junior in 2002


Eddie Leonard

Class of 2007

• 2007 Salem News Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year was the Tanners' second ever All-American

• Three-time GBL basketball all-star topped 1,000 career points, averaging 20.5 per game as a senior

• Football captain was hard-hitting free safety and Greater Boston League all-star

Matt Sucharewicz

Class of 2007

• Outstanding ice hockey player graduated with 106 career points (42 goals, 64 assists), received Boston Bruins sportsmanship award and was three-time Greater Boston League all-star

• Tremendous defensive catcher hit .359 as a senior, leading North finalists in doubles while earning GBL & Agganis all-star honors

• Also lettered in golf and went on to earn NEIBCA All-Region and ABCA All-America honors in baseball at St. Anselm
