BOYS HOCKEY

Last year’s record: 3-14-3

Head coach: Mike Geary (2nd season, 3-14-3)

Captains: Brandon Swaczyk, Sr. F; Chris Masta, Jr. F; Zach Grayton, Sr. D.

Other key players: Shane Ahlin, Jr. G; Chris Grout, Soph. F; Nick Ippolito, Soph. F; Jacob Krajeski, Soph. D.

Home rink: Essex Sports Center, Hathorne

Outlook: In their second season, the Hawks, with 15 players back, should have increased team chemistry right off the bat. The senior class is already setting the tone in practices and games with their leadership. They build off of last season by training and working together in the offseason and are ready to build upon their initial varsity campaign. The play of Ahlin in goal and the team’s defensemen should be strengths, and the crafty Masta is a legit scorer capable of of lighting the lamp any time he’s on the ice. Closing out games — Essex Tech gave up three wins by allowing goals in the final minute of play last winter — is paramount for team improvement, especially over their challenging Commonwealth Athletic Conference slate.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Last year’s record: 4-16

Head coach: Juan Juan (2nd season)

Team captains: Kendall Hersey, Jr., G; Pat Levesque, Sr., F; Ryan Reynolds, Sr., C.

Other key players: Jose Tavares, Sr., G; Nick Irving, Sr., G; Gemery Carrasquillo, Soph., G; Will Preshong, Jr. F.

Home court: Essex Tech Gymnasium, Hathorne

Outlook: Things are looking up for the pesky Hawks, who return nearly their entire lineup from a season ago. Head coach Juan Juan is encouraged by the strong fall league season by his group and committed practices early on. A tougher schedule this winter should only make this high-potential team even better.

WRESTLING

Last year’s record: 9-13

Head coach: Rich Chouinard (third season)

Captains: Colin Bracken, Sr., 132; Cameron Lampert, Jr., 138; Chris Ingalls, Sr., 195/220

Home gym: Essex Tech

Outlook: The graduation of state vocational champ Jackson Leete leaves a void, but the Hawks have a lot of experience in their three captains plus a number of returning upperclassmen to help fill out the lineup. There are also some newcomers that the coaches are excited about, so Essex Tech is looking forward to seeing their squad improve as they get their wrestling legs under them.
