BOYS HOCKEY

Last year’s record: 13-7-4 (lost to Lowell Catholic in overtime of Division 2 North quarterfinals)

Head coach: Bob Jackson (12th season, 171-74-18)

Captains: Aidan Gillis, Sr. D; Mike Kagan, Sr. C; Jacob Garfield, Jr. C.

Other key players: Sam Cioffi, Sr. F; Steve Pappas, Sr. F; Brendan Locke, Jr. D; Paul Heffernan, Jr. D; Zach Piersol, Soph. F; Loch Sheridan, F; Will Shull, Fr. F.

Home rink: Richard H. Rockett Arena, Salem State University

Outlook: The Headers return some size and experience, but need their returning forwards to assume some of the scoring punch lost to graduation. Playing strong defensively and limiting their opponents’ scoring chances are musts, as are cycling the puck better to keep it in the offensive zone. Winning 1-on-1 battles, picking up opposing players in the defensive end and getting shots to the net with traffic are other areas Marblehead will continue to work on.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Last year’s record: 10-11-1 (Did not make playoffs)

Head coach: Chris Wells (First season)

Team captains: Sydney Cresta, Jr., F; Caroline Kinne, Jr., D; Grace Moroney, Sr., F.

Other key players: Cate Delaney, So., F; Bella Peters, So., F; Abby Kalinowski, So., D; Isabelle Amigo, So., F; Elizabeth Legget, Jr., D; Kristen Bache, So., F; Mia Salah, Fr., F; Chloe Trudel, 8th, D; Juliette Pierson, 7th, D; Grace Bertagna, Jr., G.

League: Northeastern Hockey League

Home rink: Rockett Arena, Salem

Outlook: It’s once again a young squad with forward Grace Moroney being the club’s only senior. It’s not without experience, though, as many of the sophomores and juniors have been varsity regulars since eighth grade. Four of the team’s five double-digit scorers from last season return, led by career 100-point getter Sydney Cresta; defensively, sophomore Abby Kalinowski is primed for a breakout year and junior Grace Bertagna will tend the net. Marblehead has a new coach for the first time in more than a dozen years as Chris Wells aims to keep the squad trending upwards. After missing the playoffs by a single point last year, this team is hungry to get back over the .500 mark.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Last year’s record: 20-2 (Lost to Malden Catholic in Division 2 North quarterfinals)

Head coach: Mike Giardi (5th consecutive season (52-34), 10th overall)

Team captains: Derek Marino, Sr., F; Dewey Millett, Sr., F/C; Seamus Keaney, Sr., G.

Other key players: Chris Gally, Jr., G; Billy Ackerman, Jr., G; Teddy Mayle, Sr., F; Danny Doherty, Sr., F; Sam Bernstein, Sr., F; Will Brooks, Sr., F; Devin Romain, Soph., G/F; Sean McCarthy, Soph., G.; Brendan Bugler, Jr., G.

Home court: Marblehead High School gym

Outlook: On the heels of one of the best, if not the best regular seasons in program history, the Magicians are hoping a relatively new lineup can help them pick up right where they left off. Marblehead lost star point guard Patrick Bugler as well as some height overall, but has a number of talented guards and good scorers ready to fill the void.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Last year’s record: 9-10

Head coach: Jaimee Callahan (1st season)

Team captains: Hannah Garther, Sr., Guard; Madi Ernst, Sr., Guard

Other key players: Darcy O’Sullivan, Jr., Forward/Center; Maddy Lowy, So., Guard

WRESTLING

(co-op with Swampscott)

Last year’s record: 3-14

Head coach: Alex Carew (11th season)

Team captains: Being selected this week

Other key players: Ian Shevory, Sr., 126; Armani Dotson, Sr., 195; Dean Warren, Sr., 182; Andy Rosa, Jr., 220; Michael Hopkins, Fr., 120.

League: Northeastern Conference

Home gym: Swampscott High School

Outlook: The Black and Blue wrestling crew — known as such for a combination of the colors of Marblehead and Swampscott High — have some strong competitors back in the fold. Marblehead High seniors Ian Shevory (126) and Armani Doston (195) placed in the top-6 at Division 3 North sectionals last year and should be factors in their respective weight classes this winter. As of one of the few Division 3 teams in the rugged Northeastern Conference, dual meets are a challenge for the Marblehead/Swampscott squad, but they’ll surely be a factor in the matches they can fill.

Home pool: Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA

Outlook: The perennial powerhouse Magicians should be challenged by league mates Beverly and Malden and are looking forward to an exciting season. Marblehead will lean on their strong group of divers at the sectional and state meet once again.
